Bolder Boulder, Yoga and a new bike?

So, the 2007 Bolder Boulder... what a blast! A great race, very well organized (although not so much the release of the results) and a fun course. For those of you who don't know, the BolderBoulder 10K is one of the
largest road races in the country, it also attracts a VERY impressive
group of elite competitors. I just moved to Boulder 2 months ago for a
6 month internship and the first thing I did when I got the job, before
checking airline prices or looking for a place to live, was register
for the BolderBoulder, I was THAT excited about it.

This year's field included over 50,000 runners (I'll update with an
official number when I have one) and the start takes over two hours as
runners are seeded in almost 80 separate waves based on projected
finish time.

The course is fairly flat (for Boulder), with some rolling hills. Much
of the course is through the neighborhoods of Boulder, there were lots
of bands and one house full of college students set up a splash pool
and a slip and slide for racers (yes, i indulged, it was worth the
delay). Unquestionably the worst hill comes right at the end as you
trudge up Folsom road before turning into Folsom Field, home of the CU
Buffaloes (Bison!) football team. It's a heck of a spot for a steep
hill, but then when you get into the stadium, you have a mass of
humanity cheering you on for the last 2-300 meters... it's really
amazing. There is also free beer and free massages at the end, though I
couldn't find the latter.

Personally, I had a great time. I stuck to my race strategy (Tempo pace
with my HR between 80-90% until the last mile, then slowly ramp it up a
little more for the finish) and while my time was somewhat
disappointing (56:50 by my watch) considering the heat and stopping for
the slip and slide, I can't complain. Above all I had a lot of fun.

YOGA!   mmmm... stretch you I will... yes...

So I went to my first ever Yoga class on Tuesday night... and boy was I sore today. I was pleasantly
surprised with how well i was able to do the positions and I got some very positive comments from my classmates and the instructor. Specifically the instructor was surprised to find out I was a runner since runners are usually very stiff (and I'm terrible about stretching), but he said it seemed like I had a good degree of mental as well as physical flexibility. The mental flexibility he explained as having a good sense of what my body's limits are while still being open to pushing them without forcing them. I was pretty pleased with myself... until this afternoon when the soreness finally caught up with me. Ugh.

Still, I'm looking forward to my next Yoga class.

So, another new bike already? Well, yes. Basically, it comes down to this. I'm doing the 5430 half Ironman and I can't do it on the Trek hybrid. I really like that bike, but on rides over an hour or two, it kills me and I know I'm losing a lot of speed to riding in such an upright position. I strongly weighed getting a road bike and fitting it with aerobars, but barring a disaster at the 5430, i know I'm going to want to do an Ironman once I finish grad school.  I found a very good price on a bike I like a lot. More important than anything else, it's comfortable. I'll post some pictures once I've got it. the money is something of an issue (I'm still a graduate student after all) but my job pays pretty well and if it seems like it will really be an issue come the end of the summer, I'll sell the bike before I leave for Hell... I mean, Cincinnati. I won't get all my money back, but I think i could do well enough based on the results I've seen on eBay.

Another good day

It's amazing how long the days are on the weekend when you get out of bed before 7 am.  Yup, 7AM on a Saturday... sounds criminal doesn't it?  but I wanted to get up early for my workout, a mini reverse Tri.  30 minutes running, 60 minutes on the bike and 30 minutes in the pool.  It was great because it gave me a chance to add some confidence to my swim (my weakest are, not that I'm that fast at any of them anyhow).  By the time i got to the pool, i had already been working out for 90 minutes but I still had a  very strong swim (for me that is) and I was very excited after I left the pool.

Picked up my registration stuff for the BolderBOULDER on Monday, I'm very excited.  I'll be in Wave FA, which starts at 7:29:50 and I'm shootign for a sub 60minute race. I can't be more specific than that because I honetly don't know.  I'm just going to run it according to my heart rate.  Start off easy, do the middle portion close to LT and then for the last mile or so I'll really kick it up.  My # is FA162

Another good day

Got up at 6 and had a nice swim, then after work, I got in a 20 mile bike ride.  had a little trouble with the Suunto since I didn't stop my watch when the run was over.  Oops.

Looks like it should be a fun weekend.. the BolderBoulder is on Monday and is preceded by the Running Expo (always fun) and the Boulder Creek Festival as well... I'm looking forward to a very enjoyable weekend!

Busy Week!

It's been quite the busy week, so i haven't had a chance to post. let's see...

Sunday, 10 mile long run, felt pretty darn good.

Monday, no run, off day

Tuesday, 3 miles easy and *big news*

Wednesday, 4 tempo miles with hill work, 10 miles on the bike

Thursday, no run, 10 miles bike, VERY short swim

So, the *big news* is I'm now officially signed up for the 5430 Long Course Half-Ironman to be held here in Boulder on August 12th.  I'm not sweating the bike and definitely not th run, but I am a little concerned about the swim.  Fortunately I'm not concerned about racing the course, just finishing so the next twelve weeks are going to mostly be built around working on my swim and integrating the events together.

Why would I be dumb/crazy enough to make my first Tri be a half-Iron?  Well, pretty much because I'm dumb/crazy enough to make my first race be a marathon, but not dumb/crazy enough to have my first Tri be a FULL Ironman.

Nothing motivates like a deadline...

Sunday Long Run

I took the time to figure out my daily caloric needs, care
of the information I found at the Zen
and the Art of Triathlon
podcast and it works out to a daily caloric need
of 2769 calories.  65-70% of my calories need to come from carbohydrates
(4 calories per gram), 15-20% from protein (4 calories per gram) and 10-15%
from fat (9 calories per gram).  I’m pretty sure I’m not
meeting those numbers.  I’m probably well over it as far as the fat
goes.  The tricky thing, of course, is that when you go out to eat, you
have no idea what’s in the food.

On another topic, Registration is open for the 2008 Arizona Ironman
on April 11th.  While I feel like I could get ready for a
Ironman in that amount of time, that’s smack in the middle of my last
quarter of Thesis work, so I need to find something that is a little more
conducive time-wise.  Ironman Lake Placid is in late July, so that might
be something to consider but Fall 2008 might be wiser.

I had a great run last night and another good one
today.  Today’s was a 4 mile Tempo run and was pretty strong.
I’m thinking that with the Bolder Boulder, I’ll stick to a 160-180
HR range, with the first half sticking to roughly 165, then the second half
moving up to 170 and the last mile bumping up to 175-180.

What's in a title?

Tempo run at lunch, up to the start of the BolderBOULDER and back to the office.  Very disappointed in my pace, frankly.  But it was darned hot and towards the end it was hard to keep my HR below 90%.  It will be interesting to see how the BolderBOULDER goes.

T: 42:35

D: 3.99 mi

HR: 164 bpm

10:41 pace

What's in a title?

Finally got my footpod today.  I still need to calibrate it, but from the run i did today, it actually seems to be pretty close already.

T: 31:19

D: 2.71 mi

HR: 150bpm

11:34 pace

WTD: 9 mi

Man, my pace is SLOW!  But I know i need to put in a lot of 'easy' miles to improve my endurance and mix in the right amount of hard workouts so that I can improve my pace.  I hate running slow, but you've gotta do what you've gotta do...

Indian and Aching

My roommate's mother is Indian and she made a big Indian diner for us tonight... so good but now it's disagreeing with my digestive track.  Not fun.

No run today, I did 3 miles at lunch yesterday, then 25 miles on the bike in the evening with Alex... I don't think I've ever done more than 17-18 miles in a single stretch before, so it left me more sore and tired than i really expected to be.

Didn't help that it was probably the last time I'd see Alex before she left.

Short easy run

T: 31:44

A decent lunchtime run, then I had a hard 5 mile bike ride out to the ballfields for kickball (yes, kickball) and an even harder 5 mile ride back.

Short easy run

T: 37:43

HR: 150 avg

D: Approximately 3.5 miles

A nice late afternoon run.  I tested my maxHR yesterday and ended up with a max of 187, which is a good bit lower than I had been thinking it was so i really have to adjust my HR training.

Runnning and a new toy

I got myself a new toy, a Suunto T6. Boy is this thing fun.  Heart rate, Speed and distance (for running or biking) plus an altimeter, temperature, barometer and a built in training computer with PC interface.... I love me a new gadget!

why the new toy though?  Well, my old Timex Ironman has really reached the end of the line.  I didn't like the GPS function a whole lot once I used it a lot, reception was often spotty in the city or anywhere with a lot of trees.  Recently, the HR monitor really gave up the ghost though and I use that a lot, the band on the watch has practically disintegrated. So it was time for a new one and voila, the T6.

I'll have more to say when I've used it more.
