Pooped

I think if my bike wasn't set up in my room, I'd have had a hard time getting to my room after tonight's workout... it's amazing what a difference taking 5 seconds off a run target pace and tacking on 10 watts to a ride can make!
That's not a complaint by any means, I love the hard workouts, but WOW am I feeling it right now!
I can hear Mark chuckling to himself as he reads this... Well good! I'm enjoying it! Maybe that means I'm slightly sick in the head or a little bit loopy... but heck, you'd have to be to want to race a marathon, much less shooting for an Ironman!

Home... home on the range... And food.

Where the deer and the rattlesnakes play...

it's worth mentioning that I now have a home in Boulder, back with the same roommate, Paula.

I also have a flight. I arrive in Colorado on June 24th. That's 60 days from today. I leave Cinci in 51 and graduate in 49.

Yeah, I'm counting.

Ah....

Had a great swim today, still need to get my bike ride in though.
I had an amazingly relaxing weekend... man oh man did I need it...

Earthquake

As I tried to fall asleep last night (2 amish) I was wondering why the hell the local dogs were being so damn bonkers.

Cincinnati was just awakened by a long, shaky earthquake.

Oh boy...

I have to admit, my DVD collection has been feeling a little weak lately. The last few times I've hopped on the bike to go for a ride, I've had a hard time finding something that really captured my interest and kept it throughout the ride.

Today one of my classmates showed my hulu.com. Oh boy... Hulu is a site where you can watch whole movies and old (and somewhat new) television show episodes for nothing. Completely free. Completely legal... on my laptop... any time I want. Every once in a while you have to sit through one 30 second commercial. Big whup.

I now have new media for my training rides.

Anything worth having or doing on the internet is free. Fellow gerbil-wheel riders, you can keep your Netflix subscriptions.... I've got my Hulu...

Car v. Bike

According to AAA, the average American drives 15000 miles annually at a cost per mile, with a new car, of $0.522 per mile (That's for 2006, 2007's numbers aren't out yet but I can't see that number going down). That's $7830 per year.

I don't drive. I haven't owned a car since I was 19 (almost 20) and I don't expect that to change once school is over and I move to Boulder. Since I will be walking, busing and, most importantly, biking everywhere I go, does that mean I can reasonably budget that $7830/year ($650/month) towards a bike and bike maintenance?

5 Weeks

Five weeks since I updated my training log.

5 weeks.

I've got some catching up to do.... but I've got most of this week in. I just felt like I should come here and confess my sin before I went any further.

Position Critique Rsults - Shave dem legs!

A week or so ago I posted photos of me on my bike here and on Triscoop for critique on my bike position.

The general consensus resulted in two conclusions.

First is that my position was good. This was something of a surprise and comfort since when I had my bike shipped, I didn't tape off the positions of everything, which was pretty stupid, but there it is. So I had to readjust and position everything myself and it's good to know I didn't completely blow it.

The second is that I should shave my fuzzy legs.
I know shaving your legs is kind of a thing among triathletes and I can certainly understand it among the pros and even the elite amateurs. But me? I'm a back of the packer.
What's more I'm a low-maintenance back of the packer. I don't like even having to shave my facial hair, I really wish it would just stop growing. I keep it trimmed very short and trim it down once a week. It's comfortable, low maintenance and I like the look. Ditto my haircut. It's easy and requires zero daily maintenance beyond a simple wash. It's not long enough to comb, brush, style or bother with any 'product'.
I can't imagine there will ever be a period when I'll need the extra split second difference that shaving my legs will make so, really, I don't see the point.
I'm fuzzy and damn proud of it. Call me Capn Fuzzy Legs!

Chasing Boston

This blog was born as a result of, and named after, my dream to qualify for the Boston Marathon. As much as I enjoy the triathlon stuff, at my core I'm still a runner, it's just who I am. I am Chasing Boston.

So where am I in regards to this dream?
Well, first of all, to get there I need to finish a certified marathon in 3:10:59 or less. That's a 7:17 pace.
My first marathon I finished in 4:52:04, an 11:10 pace. I'm not sure what my current marathon pace would be, but a 5k at a 7:17 pace would probably be pushing it (though I think I'm very close).
I do feel confident I could do a marathon in under a 10:00 pace, but beyond that, I'm not sure. Yet.
it will be exciting to get my 5k pace down below 7:17. It would be like finally having that pace in range...

Oops

So I get to the Rec this morning and change and head out to the pool... and something just feels off. Like I'm forgetting something. I chalk it up to the fact that I'm not usually in the water at just after 8am and still not entirely awake.
I hope in the pool, hit the start button on my watch, push off from the side of the pool aaaaand... promptly headed back to the side of the pool.
I forgot my goggles.
I climb out of the pool, dash into the locker room, open my bag and... no goggles.
I left them at home.
Doh!
So I shower (I hate smelling like chlorine), dry off, change, head home, find my goggles (and my swim paddles) trek back up to the Rec, change (again) and finally get my swim in.
Now, if I had done this in the evening like I have been for most of this year, I'd have been up a creek. But because it was pre-8am when I first got to the Rec, I was still able to get my workout done by 11.

Lesson Learned!

One morning

This is one morning where I finally managed to get up close to when I wanted to. I was shooting for 6, but for someone who has been getting up at 10 or 11, after being up until 2 or 3, 7:30 is pretty good.

I am SO not a morning person...

Catching up

I've been away from here for entirely too long.
My training has been going so-so. I've had some really, really good days and some less than good days.
Last Sunday through Tuesday (3/30-4/1) were some GREAT training days. Sunday I started ignoring my watch when out on my run. Well, not entirely, basically I just set it so that I couldn't see what my pace was, instead just watching the total time and trying to monitor my current effort. I ended up doing 10.2 miles in 90 minutes, an 8:48 pace! And I felt really good.
Monday was more of the same, this time on the bike. My 90 minute bike ride resulted in an average 138 watts. When i did my swim, the pool was set to 50m instead of 25 yards... what a difference THAT makes! I think i mentioned this once before, but holy cow...
Then Tuesday I rocked the bike AND the run on my interval sets.

On the not so great side, I missed my speed workouts the last two weeks... I just got so caught up in my work that I completely missed them. My swim on Sunday was short too because, again, I got caught up working and forgot how late it was so I was only able to get in part of the workout.
On the plus side, these are time management problems, not problems due to injury, over-training or anything like that so I should be (and I am!) thankful for that. Eventually I'm going to get my internal clock straight and get my sorry butt out of bed early enough to work out BEFORE I go to studio, that way I can't get caught up in work and lose track of time.

Positioning

I posted a photo of myself on my bike on Triscoop for some positioning critique, I figured I should post them here too, if only for posterity's sake.
There are three photos, AND a 30 second video. Points for whoever is first to correctly guess what movie I'm watching whilst on the bike....

Kona!

For anyone who hasn't caught on just yet, yes, the Kona post was an April Fool's joke. What would make it even funnier though is if I DID win a Kona lotto spot... nobody would believe me!

the BBC pulled my favorite prank of the day though. Click here to see penguins fly...

Holy... Cow...

I got my information for volunteering at IMLP yestreday in the mail.
At least, that's what I thought it was when I got home last night, too pooped to bother with it.
Instead, it's something better...
I won the lottery!
no, no... I'm not a millionaire... it's better than that!
I'm going to Kona.
Kona, Hawaii

I won the Ironman lottery for s spot at the 2008 Ford Ironman World Championships! My friend Nicole always insisted I had luck like no one she's ever known... she's right!

KONA!
KONA!
KONA!
KONA!

Marky my boy, it might be time to make some tweaks to the training schedule...
